Laurel Drama Program

A Star is Born
Kids have a natural instinct to express themselves. Happily, every child gets the chance to be a star at The Laurel School. Our Drama Program harnesses students’ creative instincts to help them communicate in various ways, work together as a group, and build confidence—all keys to success both in school and in adult life.

Every student takes part in the Drama Program’s annual musical, whether as an actor, as part of the chorus, or behind the scenes. Laurel students have put on lively productions of plays such as Brothers GrimmBroadway Bound, Mother Goose Mystery, and Babes on Broadway. By curtain close, the students have had an experience they’ll never forget—and many have come out of their shells and discovered a new talent in the process. The Drama Program also puts on an annual talent show, giving students a chance to really shine as performers.

In Grades 5 through 8, the students’ focus shifts from putting on their own production to learning about the history of modern drama—from Shakespeare, to Vaudeville, to early motion pictures and television. History is vividly brought to life, as the kids watch Charlie Chaplin’s silent film Gold Rush, or listen to Orson Welles’ famous radio drama, The War of the Worlds.

“I love the drama program. If you don’t want to be on stage, there’s always crew. Crew’s fun, and it gets people to come out of their shells a little more.”
— Jenna, 8th Grade student

“I’ve been in two schools plays so far, and I love the drama program. I like acting—the feel of being on stage and the rush you get when you feel the applause is really exhilarating.”
— Midori, 7th Grade student
