The Laurel School’s instructional program nurtures the development of the whole child—intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially—while also recognizing the variety of learning styles and differences among able students. Our goal is to develop and maintain an early love of learning.
We understand that each child has a unique pace. Teachers implement a broad curriculum using a variety of styles to help students learn individually and in cooperative groups of various size or ability. We challenge children to do their best, whatever their individual learning style and developmental stage. For example, we engage the auditory, visual and kinesthetic learner through various methodologies including Brain Gym, Handwriting Without Tears, Lindamood Bell Visualizing & Verbalizing, Making Math Real, and the Slingerland Approach.
Laurel’s structure allows children to work at their own pace, working on a topic until they are ready to advance to the next level. This flexibility is important for children who tend to have areas of significant strength and others areas which are still developing.
Focus on the Whole Child
As part of our commitment to nurture the whole child, social and emotional learning are integral to our school-wide curriculum. Teachers monitor the developmental needs of all students and believe personal and interpersonal growth to be among the most important outcomes of our academic programs.
The instruction fosters cooperative rather than competitive relationships between students and is designed to stimulate intellectual curiosity, build self-confidence and provide tools for success within the interpersonal domain. We believe strongly in the power of self-respect and in helping children develop respect and concern for the well being of others.
